How LiDAR Was Used At Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, meaning 'Temple City', is located deep in the jungles of central Cambodia. At 402 acres, Angkor Wat is the world's largest religious monument. Researches believe the structures date as far back as the 12th Century.

Recently, a group of archaeologists utilized LiDAR technology to further uncover the hidden structures buried beneath centuries of vegetation. Mounted to a small helicopter, the LiDAR sensor scanned the area in a criss-cross pattern. The data reveled a complex much larger that anyone could imagine.

The LiDAR results displayed never before documented cityscapes, temples, roadways and impressive waterways beneath the dense vegetation.

"LiDAR provides an unparalleled ability to penetrate dense vegetation cover and map archaeological remains". Click on the image to learn more about this project.
